Wollongong Councillor may have been targeted over stance on land re-zoning

A Wollongong Councillor says property developers wanting to build homes at Helensburgh could be behind three attacks to his property over the past week.

Wollongong Council is currently giving serious consideration to plans to rezone land at Helensburgh connected to the Royal National Park, with much of the land likely to become permanently excluded from future housing development.

"I have been asked by people in Helensburgh to meet them", he said.

Last week a box trailer of asbestos was left outside his home and his car was vandalised.

Councillor Petty says he's been approached by land developers wanting to discuss rezoning, but will only meet them in public.

Wollongong Police are making inquiries into possible suspects.

"My answer is no problem at all, I'll meet you in council chambers, I'll invite the other councillors to attend.

"That doesn't suit a number of the developers here, they want to meet me privately", he said.

The police also say they are also conducting regular patrols of the area.

Wollongong City Council late last year passed resolutions on 12 reports addressing 27 different precincts in the 7(d) land areas in Helensburgh, Otford and Stanwell Tops.
